Purple Gum Pop Paintings

01.May.15 Quick paintings - series of 3
The house is in a constant state of prettifying. On Friday morning, I was requested to make a series of paintings. I knew I wanted to make something with gum leaves or gum trees, so this was what I conjured up for the stairway.

The first was this child-like close-up of a little broken twig with gum pods on it. (The nice things you can find on the ground!) It took a fair bit longer than I had wished to spend, given how I am not a big fan of it at the end... To be honest I don't know why I chose purple as the background, too. (I wanted something light.)

Moving on to the second, I thought to have fun with the leaves. Such a great practice of brush strokes... Stuck a real gum leaf and painted it gold, if you can spot it.

Finally, I love bark. In keeping with the purple and pop theme, I thought to play on an "inversion" of colours, i.e. the background is of real bark colour while painting actual bark pieces brightly. I conclude that 1. sticking curved bark pieces on wet paint is very time-consuming, and 2. achieving the colour of bark is a lot more difficult than it looks -- it is not brown, but more grey -- and went with splashes of gold instead.

  1. Wow. How clever are you to rustle up 3 paintings in a morning. Puts me to shame. They look great by the way!
