What is a Tortilla?

1. Tortilla: a flour-based baked flat-bread.

2. Tortilla de patatas, or Spanish omelette:  fried potatoes and eggs.

3. Tortilla: [Spanish slang] a homosexual woman.

Definition 3 was brought to my awareness just last year, when 3 Spanish-speaking friends were puzzled over my E-mail address. "Why tortilla?" asked one during German class... "Pero you have husband, no?"

Believe me, had I known it sooner (i.e. 1997), I would have picked 'Juanita Banana' as my username.
After all, I am quite the bananas (slang meaning crazy).

  6. Well, you live and learn... I never knew that Spanish Omlette was called tortilla until we moved to France and the boys started eating it in school diners!

  7. OOPS!! Made me laugh though.

I was taught to make tortilla de patatas by a spanish student who stayed with us for a couple of months many years ago. It is rather time consuming if you do it properly, but boy is it worth all the effort. I am told my tortillas are pretty darned good!

Oh poo, now I am drooling and could happily devour a tortilla. Might just have to make some for dinner tomorrow. If I do, I'll take some pics.

  8. Tortillas are the reason I'm chubby. Er... wait, homosexual women are not the reason I'm chubby. Oh, never mind. ;)

  12. Thanks Juanita for dropping by! It's nice to see good old blogging friends coming over yet again... :) I think I know what you feel, with my blog I started to feel I was missing my blog's initial purpose - i got a bit swapped away with what others were doing on their blogs, with all the tags, awards, etc.. I loved your post! Quite often visiting your blog I was trying to find the link to 'tortilla'. I mostly thought about the Spanish omelette though, as this is one of my favourite dishes simply :) As for the 3rd meaning, can it be that you are confusing it with 'tortillera' which sounds so much alike with 'tortilla'? sorry for being a pain, i'm a Spanish speaker - but not native so I'd be curious to know the difference :)
